How to Make Your Own DIY Essential Oils

Essential oils, rooted in aromatherapy theory, uniquely influence the human body when combined with corresponding music and massage techniques. This synergy aims to promote beauty, enhance physical wellness, support healthcare, and assist in treating certain conditions.

When we encounter stress, sensory information from stressors—such as sight, hearing, smell, and touch—is collected and transmitted to the brain via the peripheral nervous system, which then responds to the stressor. Excessive stress can lead to issues like headaches, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, mental burnout, and weakened immunity. Essential oils, when inhaled, are quickly transmitted to the brain, enabling the nervous system to regulate vital functions and sensory processes effectively. This helps bring the body into a state of balance, inducing feelings of tranquility and pleasure.

Many plant essential oils have antibacterial properties and can be used to treat symptoms such as hair loss, scaling, and itching caused by harmful bacteria. Essential oil molecules can penetrate the skin and reach the hair follicle tissue, providing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects to treat hair loss due to follicle inflammation.

How to make

Currently, the most widespread and common method of producing essential oils is distillation. This technique is the most prevalent for extracting essential oils from aromatic plants, with 95% of these oils being obtained through distillation.

Choose fresh plants that possess aromatic qualities, and thoroughly wash the selected parts—such as flowers, leaves, wood chips, resin, or root bark—to ensure they are free of impurities before setting them aside.

Prepare the distillation equipment and place the aromatic plants into the distiller. To ensure the production of hygienic, clean, and sterile essential oils, it is recommended to use professional distillation equipment to maintain sterility and safety.

At the bottom of the container, water vapor is produced after heating and combustion. When the hot vapor is filled in the container, the hot air drives the plant to volatilize the aroma components, and the aromatic essential oil components in the plant evaporate with the water vapor, and as the water vapor passes through the condenser tube above, it enters the condenser step by step, these condensers are surrounded by cold water, and the water vapor is gradually converted into liquid under the action of the surrounding cold water.

The final result is essential oils and hydrosols. In the liquid obtained so far, the lighter than water oil will float on the surface of the water, the heavier oil will sink to the bottom of the water, and the remaining water will be hydrosol. Then use the separating funnel to further store the essential oil and hydrosol separately, and the two methods of essential oil + hydrosol are completed.

How to use

In most cases, such as for massages and skincare, pure essential oils need to be diluted before being applied to the skin. Since pure essential oils are highly concentrated, they are not suitable for direct use.

We usually use a base oil, a fragrance-free bases, to dilute essential oils.

- Base oil: Natural oils are extracted from plants and differ from essential oils in that they are true oils containing fatty acids. Base oils typically have no scent.

- Fragrance-Free Bases: These include fragrance-free creams, conditioners, and cleansers. These products are highly safe, with carefully screened ingredients that do not react adversely with essential oils. Designed specifically for blending with essential oils, they typically contain no fragrance, mineral oil, or coloring.

Storage

The blended essential oil should be tightly capped and stored in a dry, well-ventilated, and cool place. Alternatively, it can be refrigerated. If the base oil is jojoba oil, it may solidify at low temperatures; in this case, remove it 15-30 minutes in advance to let it return to room temperature. Do not store your DIY blended essential oil for more than 3 months.
